On August 15, Donn participated in a Kansas Health Institute study report on the health effects of large-scale hog production on a rural community. Large-scale hog production has been a major topic in Kansas agriculture for many years now, and KFU is deeply concerned about the economic and health implications this type of production has on the state and its citzens.
On August 21, Mary helped with the Mid Kansas WRAPS Cover Crop Tour held in Westmoreland, KS. Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) is a planning and management framework that engages stakeholders within a particular watershed in a process to identify watershed restoration and protection needs and opportunities, establish management goals for the watershed community, create a cost-effective action plan to achieve goals, and implement the action plan.
Donn was in Hastings, Michigan for NFU August 21-22, where he attended a meeting at Hastings Insurance working with 6 Midwestern Farmers Union states that Hastings offers insurance options for. The goal of the meeting was to receive a status update from each state and what can be done to improve the relationship for all involved.
KFU staff, board, and select members participated in a strategic planning workshop with NFU’s Harley Danielson at Rock Springs 4-H Center, August 26-27. The purpose behind the strategic plan was to develop a vision and mission statement and set goals for the organization over the next three years.
Nick attended the Salina Diocese Catholic Rural Life Conference in Victoria, KS on August 28. Catholic Rural Life (CRL) representative Matt Mamura gave three presentations, and Bishop Edward Weisenburger celebrated Mass in the recently designated Basilica of St. Fidelis.
Nick participated in the K-State College of Agriculture Tour, held at the new Kansas Department of Agriculture building, on August 29. The visit provided an opportunity for K-State to update agriculture groups and congressional aides on various research and extension, college, and university activities.
On August 29 & 30, Donn presented at the R-CALF National Convention in Cheyenne, Wyoming on behalf of NFU. According to their website, the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America (R-CALF USA) represents the U.S. cattle industry in trade and marketing issues to ensure the continued profitability and viability of independent U.S. cattle producers.
