Join us on Friday, December 5 at 1:15 p.m. for: Family Farm Advocacy Training: Building Personal Relationships with Legislators and Promoting a Proactive Discussion of the Issues
We’ll be announcing plans for the 2015 Family Farm Legislative Day to be held during the upcoming session.
Plans are coming together for a Kansas Family Farm Day during the upcoming 2015 Kansas Legislative Session in Topeka, hosted by KFU and Kansas Beginning Farmers Coalition. The event will feature a local foods legislative breakfast, family farm advocates rally, and visits with members of the Kansas Legislature. A date has not been set at this time, but please check the KFU website events page regularly for updates.
To start the day off, KFU and KBFC will host legislators at a local foods breakfast in the Capitol. By doing this, we will be building personal relationships between members and their legislators, while promoting a proactive discussion of the corporate agriculture issue. The corporate laws were not challenged during the 2014 session, being an election year, but we fully expect the issue to be aggressively moved forward during the 2015 session.
KFU & KBFC members must invest great effort into preserving what little remains of the law that protects family farmers from the expansion of corporate agriculture and protects the county option. Ally organizations such as Kansas Rural Center, Kansas Cattlemen’s Association, Kansas National Farmers Organization and their members will also be invited to participate in the day’s events.
An advocates rally is also planned, featuring speakers from ally organizations. Attendees will be encouraged to visit privately with their legislators at breakfast or at some point later in the day. It is extremely important legislators know how we feel about the corporate agriculture issue, as well as other issues facing Kansas family farmers, ranchers, and their rural communities.
